Their Story
Ruby came into our lives after we had heard mom’s old friend had bred baby golden doodles. How lucky were we to find ourselves at a puppy sale? When we first arrived it seemed daunting, trying to find a pup that was “perfect” for us. But, when I spotted Ruby with her black lace collar and sweet little nose, the task was quite easy. She was simply perfect. Adorable, teeny tiny, and a look in her eyes that was so easy to love immediately. Unfortunately, we had to wait until our cousin Amelia was born to pick her up and take her home with us. A month or so later, she was in the car with us and cried the whole way home. I remember taking her out for the first time and finally understanding what yellow snow was. My first pet, my only dog, and the one that set the bar so high for any future furry members of our family. She grew so quickly but never seemed to notice. Her 75 pound body would find its way to my mom’s bed every night, laying on her entirely as if she were a lap dog. This never stopped. She was so loving and fun, always ready to play but also ready to wind down when you said the word. She was such a polite eater, only scarfing down her food bowls at night whole no one else was around. Still, it didn't stop her from tearing up the trash (very) often. She was a bad thing, but it was so difficult to stay mad at her. She would even learn to punish herself and we would find her laying in the bathroom after she’d ransacked the garbage. Such a smart and loyal girl. She’d have adventures in the woods and come back muddy, sticks in her hair, ticks all over. I wish i could see an adventure of hers through her eyes. The deer she’d chase, birds she barked at, and squirrels she always failed to capture. She loved snow too. Her curly blonde fur always collected so much snow in the winter and it would be impossible to get the snow balls off. Still, it meant more time to bathe her with nice warm water and make her look all fuzzy after. Ruby lived for nine blissful, incredible years and we all miss her everyday. It’s been some time since she’s passed, but our family still hasn’t gotten another dog. Ruby was perfect for us, and she stayed with us until her little heart just couldn’t take it anymore. On the day she died, she was so weak that we had to drag her out into the car on a blanket because she couldn’t walk herself. Cancer had taken her from us so quickly, but I think her light still glowed until the very end. She found strength one last time for my mom and I as we drove her to the vet. She sat up, stuck her head out the window (a favorite activity) and just basked in the sun one final time. I was so happy for her that she was able to do that. I wish i fed her more treats, took her on longer walks, and most of all I wish she was still here with us. But, she was perfect through and through. My family is so lucky to have called her our pup, and i think I’ll miss her forever!
