Roscoe's story
Roscoe’s Story ❤️ October 19, 2021 — Forever in Our Hearts On October 19th, 2021, Roscoe came into our lives from the OC Animal Care shelter in Tustin, CA. He had been surrendered by a young family who could no longer care for him. I remember the day we picked him up from the shelter so well. He was a bit hesitant to leave at first, which was understandable, considering he had already been moved around a couple of times. He was probably a little shaken up by all the uncertainty of not knowing where he would end up next. We earned his trust quickly, though. The first few months of having Roscoe in our family were so much fun. He was curious about everything and loved exploring his new surroundings. He adored his pet parents, my brother and his former wife, and since we all lived together in the same house, we all got to spend time with him. It didn't take long for us to form a bond with him. He quickly became a cherished member of our family. Roscoe loved going on walks, riding in the car, and sniffing everything he possibly could. He would make everyone smile whenever we took him out in public. He was incredibly social and loved people and animals alike. He was so friendly and charming. An absolute sweetheart. My favorite times with Roscoe were the quiet moments we spent together at home. Just hanging out, relaxing, going to the park, taking walks, eating treats, and snuggling. Those simple moments are some of my most cherished memories, and they're the ones I will always hold close to my heart. Moments that might have seemed insignificant to anyone else, but that I would give anything in the world to experience just one more time. I will never forget the way Roscoe would come up to my bedroom door to see if I was there. He would gently push the door open with his forehead and walk into my room, so happy to see me. There was something about being greeted by him that made me feel so loved. It was one of the best feelings on earth. No matter what kind of day I was having, having Roscoe come looking for me was a feeling I can't quite put into words. He wasn't just walking into my bedroom. He was coming to see me, and somehow, that made the world feel right. On my days off from work, Roscoe would be so excited to see me in the morning. He would climb right into bed with me and snuggle up beside me until it was time to get up for his morning walk and breakfast. Those mornings were some of my favorite moments with him. There was nowhere else I would have rather been than right there with my boy, enjoying his company and having those extra moments together before starting the day. We would spend the entire day together until my brother came home from work. I loved having that time with Roscoe. We had our own little routine, and there was something so special about simply being in each other's company. We didn't need to be doing anything extraordinary. Just having him nearby was enough to make an ordinary day feel special. I loved hearing Roscoe snore when he settled down for his afternoon naps. I loved his little grunts and snorts when he played with his toys or flopped around in his bed. Even now, those little sounds are etched into my memory. Things that once seemed so ordinary have become some of the things I miss most about him. I would give anything to hear those familiar sounds again, just one more time. And then there was his goofy little personality. Roscoe would flip over onto his back with the biggest, silliest grin on his face, practically inviting me to come over and tickle his belly. He had one very specific spot he wanted me to scratch: the little area right between his two front legs. And heaven forbid my hand ever wandered away from that exact spot... He would shift and reposition his body most adorably, making it clear that I needed to get my hand back where it belonged. He knew exactly what he wanted, and somehow, he always found a way to communicate it to me. Those little interactions meant everything to me. They were our moments, our little routine, and a special kind of connection that belonged to the two of us. I can still picture his happy face, his body wiggling around as he tried to get comfortable, and that unmistakable look that told me I had better get back to his favorite spot. I also loved how soft his ears felt whenever I stroked them. Roscoe was such a soft, gentle, tenderly loving little boy. There was something about him that made you want to hold him close and never let go. His presence brought so much comfort into my life, and I don't think he could ever have understood just how much those simple moments meant to me. Roscoe gave us so much, unknowingly. He taught me the value of slowing down, taking the time to smell the flowers, and learning to live in the moment. He reminded me to appreciate what was happening right in front of me instead of always worrying about what came next. There was something about the way he lived his life that made me realize how easy it is to overlook the little things that bring us happiness. Roscoe found joy in the simplest things, whether it was going for a walk, sniffing around outside, getting a treat, or simply curling up somewhere comfortable. He taught me to appreciate those moments, too. He also taught me that deep, unconditional love and devotion were still possible. The love he gave was so pure and genuine. He didn't care about what kind of day I had, how I looked, or whether I had anything exciting planned. He was just happy to be around me. His love was consistent, comforting, and something I could always count on. Having that kind of connection with him reminded me just how special the bond between a person and their dog can be. Roscoe also helped repair the bond between me and my family members. In many ways, he brought us together through our shared love for him and our responsibility to care for him. We had something special in common, and that was our love for Roscoe. He gave us a reason to connect and come together. I don't think he could have ever understood just how much of an impact he had on our family, not only individually, but collectively. He brought something positive into our lives that extended far beyond the relationship each of us had with him. When I think about everything Roscoe brought into our lives, I realize he was so much more than a dog who came into our home one October day. He was a source of comfort, happiness, connection, and love. He helped bring our family closer together, taught me to slow down, and gave me some of the happiest memories of my life. He made an impact on me in ways I will carry with me forever. Now, when I think about all these memories, my heart aches in a way that is difficult to explain. I am heartbroken knowing that I will never experience those things again. I will never feel the softness of his ears beneath my fingers, hear his little snores during his afternoon naps, listen to his adorable grunts and snorts, or watch him push open my bedroom door just to come and see me. I will never again have him climb into bed beside me on my days off or feel the warmth of his body snuggled up against mine. Those are the things grief has made me realize I took for granted. Not because I didn't appreciate them, but because I never imagined there would come a day when I would have to live without them. When you love an animal so deeply, you don't think about the last time you'll hear their footsteps, the last time you'll stroke their ears, or the last time they'll come looking for you. You simply love them, day after day, believing there will always be another morning, another cuddle, another belly rub. Losing Roscoe is one of the biggest heartbreaks of my life. There is a particular kind of pain that comes with losing an animal you love so deeply because they become woven into the fabric of your everyday life. They become part of your routines, your comfort, your happiest moments, and even the quiet spaces in between. They love you in a way that asks for so little and gives so much in return. And when they're gone, the silence they leave behind can feel unbearable. Roscoe was so much more than a dog to me. He was my companion, my little shadow, my source of comfort, and a beautiful soul who made my days brighter simply by being in them. He gave me so many moments of happiness without ever needing to do anything more than be himself. He made me feel loved in the simplest, purest ways, and I hope he felt just as loved by me as I did by him. Sometimes, I wish I could go back to those ordinary days and appreciate every second a little longer. I would stay in bed with him for a few more minutes. I would tickle that little spot between his front legs for as long as he wanted. I would stroke his soft ears, listen to him snore, and memorize every little sound he made. I would let him push open my bedroom door a hundred more times, just so I could experience that feeling of seeing his sweet face coming toward me again. I wish I could have one more ordinary day with him. Nothing special planned, nowhere we needed to be. Just the two of us spending time together the way we always did. I would give anything to have him beside me again, to hear those little noises he made, to see that goofy grin on his face, and to feel the comfort of having him close. But perhaps that is what makes those memories so precious. They are pieces of a life we shared, moments that belonged to us, and reminders of a love that was real and irreplaceable. Although I can no longer experience those moments with him, I will always have the memories of them. And as painful as it is to miss him, I know how fortunate I was to have loved him so deeply. I hope Roscoe knew how much he meant to me. I hope he knew that he was safe, that he belonged, and that he was loved beyond measure. I hope he felt the same comfort and happiness in our home that he gave to me every single day. We welcomed him into our family when he needed a home, but he ended up giving us so much more than we could have ever imagined. I will always be grateful for October 19th, 2021, the day Roscoe came into our lives. I am grateful for every walk, every car ride, every treat, every snuggle, and every quiet day we spent together. I am grateful for the way he made me feel, for the lessons he taught me, and for the way he helped bring my family closer together. Thank you, Roscoe, for being you. Thank you for all the love you gave us, for the happiness you brought into our home, and for reminding me what truly matters in life. You may no longer be here for me to reach out and touch, but the love I have for you will always be a part of me. I miss you more than words can express, my sweet boy. I miss your face, your softness, your goofy personality, and all the little things that made you who you were. I miss knowing that you were just a few steps away. I miss the boy who would push open my bedroom door just to come and see me, never knowing that those simple visits would become some of my most treasured memories. You will always be a cherished part of our family. You will always be the sweet boy who taught me to slow down, helped bring us together, and showed me just how much love a dog can bring into a person's life. **Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever my Roscoe.** ❤️
